Mice or rats: how to tell the difference

Mice are small (7–10 cm without the tail), with large ears and a pointed snout. They explore new things and usually nest inside walls, cupboards and appliances. Norway rats are much bigger (up to about 25 cm without the tail), with a blunt nose and small ears. They are cautious around new objects, so traps and bait stations need to be placed and left differently. Rats often burrow outside and come in through foundation gaps, drains and garage doors.
